NAB 2015: 8K Full-Frame Red WEAPON Camera Was Just Announced With R3D Raw and ProRes

Even though many of us have a few ideas what to expect from RED at this year’s NAB in regards to new cameras, the official announcement of the Red WEAPON is indeed one of the biggest and highly anticipated news. The new (future upgrade) Vista Vision sized 8192 x 4320 sensor inside the new RED WEAPON camera will be capable of outputting the impressive 75fps at the maximum 8K resolution. Plus, the camera will provide ProRes recording internally along with the well-known R3D RAW files similar to the 6K WEAPON Dragon cameras.

Obviously, there will be multiple versions of the WEAPON 6K camera, with Carbon Fiber having higher recording frame rate options in ProRes (up to 120fps) over the WEAPON Magnesium (up to 60fps). Plus, WEAPON is backward compatible with all the existing power options such as batteries, chargers and power adaptors, RED MINI-MAGs, DSMC lens mounts, cables, and most mounting and support components.

WEAPON Upgrade packages include replacements for critical modules and components while Carbon Fiber WEAPONs support new upgrade paths as technology advances. The 8K cameras will be shipping by the end of 2015 whereas the 6K WEAPON cameras should be available this summer.
