How to Easily Emulate a Hyperlapse Video in Premiere Pro CC

Beyond any doubt, a well executed hyperlapse sequence can be an incredibly effective asset that can add loads of production value to any of your projects. Considering the fact that you have to do a serious planning of your hyperlapse shooting in advance and then take hundreds if not thousands of pictures on location while changing the position of your camera each time, this could be indeed a very intimidating and time-consuming process.

Fortunately, US-based video editor Justin Odisho has an excellent post-production workflow in mind that shows how you can shoot your footage in real-time and then easily mimic the hyperlapse look in post while using some basic video effects in Premiere Pro CC. Traditionally, that’s one of those truly insightful tutorials of the talented creative professional that you certainly don’t want to miss. So without further ado, let’s jump straight into the tutorial itself.

After you drag and drop your normal speed video onto Premiere’s timeline, head over to the Effects panel and search for the Posterize Time filter. Once you apply it to the selected clip, change the Frame Rate in the Effect Controls panel from 24 frames to 1. That way, you’ll still be able to play back the edit in real-time, but now you’ll see only a single frame for each second of video.

Then, all you have to do is to speed up your posterized clip by right-clicking on it, choosing Clip Speed/Duration and increasing the speed to 800%. Since you’re playing back the video multiple times faster, you will need to start with a particularly long clip in the first place if you want to end up with a hyperlapse video that has a decent length when added to your edit.

Overall, this simple, yet very useful technique can save you all the hustle and bustle of a conventional hyperlapse shooting since you will only need to capture some normal speed videos and then convert them to a hyperlapse sequence in post.
