NAB 2018 is finally over, but apparently, we won’t remember it only with the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and ProRes RAW announcements. How about the single universal adapter showcased by the Chinese Cinematic International Company Limited?
Yeah, that’s right. In a nutshell, this fancy piece of equipment allows you to mount virtually any manual photo or cinema lens to your smartphone while utilizing a wide range of mount options including Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, just to name a few. Actually, it reminds me a lot of the BeastGrip DOF Adapter which is also a modular rig system with a removable lens mount assembly and a handle that enables users to attach a wide variety of photography/cinema lenses to a smartphone.
Following the initial concept of turning your smartphone into a working cinema camera, this DOF adapter allows different adjustments and the ability to use various Android and other non-iOS devices in addition to its compact and lightweight design. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll probably have to use some sort of support system for the lens itself, especially if you pick a heavier piece of glass.
Even though the China-based company has been manufacturing photography equipment out of its own factory for over a decade now, I would probably be more careful and take my chances by picking up an adapter from a more reputable manufacturer. Nonetheless, if you need a cheaper alternative, keep an eye on the listing in the Cinematic International Ebay store.
If you are wondering about the price and availability of this DOP adapter, I should let you down as these haven’t been disclosed by the Cinematic International representative at NAB show. Just as a reference, the Beastgrip Pro adapter currently sells for $139.99, so I’ll be quite surprised if this particular unit goes beyond this price.
