As we are getting closer to the NAB, the rumours about the upcoming new 4K cameras that are going to be released in this year’s show are popping up almost every hour now. However, nothing has been officially confirmed yet. One of the latest reports reveals new details about the highly anticipated Canon 4K camera that is supposed to be a competitor to the Panasonic GH4 and was showed off at a press event in China at the end of the last month.
The information at this point is still insufficient, though. It’s only known that the camera will have a 1-inch CMOS sensor, a fixed 10X 24-240mm equivalent lens, built-in W-Fi capabilities along with an external viewfinder. According to the new details that the Canon Rumors recently brought to light, the camera will also feature 10 to 12 stops of latitude along with the ability to shoot C-Log.
The site is also reporting that both the hand grip and the viewfinder can be entirely removed from the body, leaving just the basic camera module and the fixed lens. Honestly, like many other people, I’m still a little bit confused and don’t get the idea behind the concept of this bizarre 4K modular system that features a fixed lens on the front. I guess Canon’s thinking is it can go on drones and handheld gimbal stabilisers easier, hence the modular concept.

Probably we’ll have to wait a few days before we get the official announcement. Whatever the case may be, it’s certain that Canon are about to reveal a new 4K camera on this year’s show, whether it’s going to be this one in particular or any another model. Chances are there will be at least one new camera in the EOS Cinema line-up that will feature 4K recording onboard as per various rumors we’ve heard so far.
However, as for now, these are only speculations, yet the truth is about to be revealed very soon. Eventually, many filmmakers still hope that Canon has taken the concept of video 4K acquisition seriously and finally will release a competitive product. Not to mention the fact that the Japanese manufacturer has a lot to catch up anyway, especially in this highly competitive and already saturated 4K camera market segment.
