After receiving some powerful and super efficient firmware updates, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, one of the smallest and most popular cinema cameras on the market today, now gets another nice accessory as well. The US-based company D|Focusystem, known for its affordable and well-build accessories for filmmakers, recently releases a unique and sturdy cage for all BMPCC users and their cameras called the D|Cage.
This tool will give you endless mounting options and, more importantly, essential protection for your camera as well. The D|Cage is specifically designed for the BMPCC and is machined from a solid block of aluminum that provides extra support and flexibility turning the tiny camera into real and compelling cinema production camera. At the same time, the cage preserves a full access to all of the camera’s functions and add-ons such as buttons, battery, memory card, back screen, mount, etc. Another great feature of the D|Cage is the HDMI clamp that provides extra stability and protects the tiny HDMI port of the BMPCC.
Here is a quick video that demonstrates some of the basic features of the D|Cage:
D|Cage Feature Highlights:
100% CNC machined aluminum construction
- Compact, form-fitting design. Made specifically to fit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera like a glove
- Full access to all of the camera’s controls, buttons, battery and memory card door
- Plenty of 1/4-20″ and 3/8-16” threads on the top and both sides of the cage
- Weighs 7.8 oz
- HDMI Cable clamp included
- Measures 5.6 x 3.2 x 1.4 inches
As any other camera in this range with such small physical dimensions in particular, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera definitely needs some extra weight and a couple of additional accessories attached in order to be used as a viable capture device. Again, this where the D|Cage comes in handy.
Furthermore, keep in mind that if you want to use your trusted collection of Canon EF lenses with the dedicated Metabones EF to MFT Speed Booster Adapter for instance, the battery life of the camera won’t last long due to the additional power consumption of the adapter. You will get roughly 15-20 minutes of shooting time at most. It will last a little bit longer if you use Micro Four Thirds lenses only.
Given that, an additional power solution is recommended and now can be easily attached to the D|Cage. With a retail price of $166 , the cage can be ordered directly from www.dfocussystem.com. You might also want to check the D|Cage for the Panasonic GH4 here.
