Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Officially Announced

The long wait is finally over! As we mentioned earlier on the blog, the highly anticipated official announcement of the brand new Canon 5D Mark IV scheduled for August 25th has been just made. As expected, the Mark IV offers loads of upgrades, including a 30.4MP full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6+ image processor that enable DCI 4K 4:2:2 8-bit video recording up to 30p, Full HD up to 60fps, 720p up to 120fps. The camera records 4K internally using MJPEG compression at 500Mb/s with 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit colour depth, while Full HD 1080p recording uses Canon’s proprietary compression options with 4:2:0 colour sampling.

Besides the typical frame rates, the Mark IV offers a true 24.00 fps recording option that is also NTSC and PAL switchable. When shooting in DCI 4K mode, the central 4096 x 2160 area of the sensor is used at a 1.74x crop to record 4K video with a 1:1-pixel ratio, thus eliminating moiré and aliasing artifacts.

Sadly, the full frame is limited to Full HD recording only. Slow motion is possible in 1080p at 60 fps, while 720p is available up to 120 fps, though it is recorded without sound. The Canon 5D Mark IV can also output a 1080p image using 4:2:2 color sampling through a mini HDMI output.

In addition, the camera allows you to pull an 8.8MP stills from your footage and provides a built-in interval shooting mode that makes capturing time-lapse videos possible without using any external accessories. For the first time in a 5D series camera, there is a built-in Wi-Fi and NFC that allow easy file transfer to a compatible smart device when using the Canon Camera Connect App.

Furthermore, the unit sports SD memory card slot and one CompactFlash memory card for storing media. The Mark IV also comes with an LP-E6N rechargeable lithium-ion battery and accepts the original LP-E6 as well. Controls remain similar to previous models with the addition of a new AF mode selection button providing quick access to focus areas and the Canon N3 remote port’s relocation to the front of the camera for easier access.

The 5D Mark IV will be available as body only, and as a kit with the EF 24-70mm f/4 Lens, as well as a kit with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens. The camera is expected to hit the shelves in early September 2016, with a retail price of  $3,499 for the body itself. If you want to pre-order it, use the links below.
