First Leaked Images of the Sony A9 II Pop Up

The end of October is just around the corner and it seems that now we have the very first leaked images of the upcoming Sony A9 Mark II.

Again, thanks to Sony Alpha Rumors, here are two low-res photos of the Sony A9 II, showing that the design is nearly identical to the recently announced Sony a7R IV and very similar to the original Sony A9 that was introduced back in April 2017.

According to SAR, the big improvements are inside the camera with a very new generation Sony sensor and improved autofocus system. There might be also a significant bump in the megapixels of the Sony A9 II’s sensor from the 24.2MP of the original model to 33-36MP on the new iteration.

As a reminder, the Sony A9 shoots 4K (UHD) internally up to 30fps using XAVC S codec (100 Mbps, 8bit 4:2:0) in both full-frame and S35 mode without pixel binning. The camera is also capable of outputting clean 4K signal to an external recorder with 4:2:2 sampling.

For now, we don’t know any of the video capabilities of the Sony A9 II, but we can clearly spot the slightly beefier grip as well as the inclusion of a focus mode dial lock button on the top left of the camera that is absent on the original model.

Other than that, Nokishita has just confirmed that Sony registered the Sony A9 II in Asia which means that the camera will be announced pretty soon. It’s still uncertain, though, what is the exact date when Sony are going to make the official announcement, but there are certain indications that this is going to happen around PhotoPlus Expo that kicks off on October 24th.

Again, the original Sony A9 is currently selling for $3,498 which is whopping $1,000 less than the initial price of the camera, which is another sign that Sony continues its tradition of selling its older cameras at discounted rates and might also indicate that the successor will be announced any day now. We’ll keep you updated on the topic as more details emerge.
