With Memorial Day Sales, Is It the Right Time to Get a New MacBook?

It isn’t often that Apple products go on sale, but when they do, it’s worth the time and effort to consider picking one up. And this Memorial Day is no different, simply because the sales are already happening now.

The simple fact though, is that retailers are clearing out most of their inventory of first-generation M1 Macbooks in order to make way for the next round of Apple Silicon products in the pipeline. The timing here is the most telling, indicating that Apple may be announcing next-gen laptops at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

And that could mean that we could see M1 Ultra laptops, or even an M2 model announced.

Though it’s a rumor, the details come from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has had the inside track lately on what’s coming out of Cupertino. Gurman said last February that new MacBooks were coming at WWDC.

This means it could be a good idea to keep one’s powder dry, and wallet closed, until June when we know for sure. That’s not to say that the M1 is a “has-been” now. Far from it. However, if the latest and greatest may be the aim, then perhaps waiting is the better option.

On the other hand, we haven’t seen a new MacBook announced at WWDC since 2019, so if a new laptop is needed, then take a look at the deals that can be had:

Right now, users can pick up a 13” M1 MacBook Pro with a retina display for up to $250 off. Keep in mind though, that the inventory consists mostly of 2020 first gen M1s, and not the M1 Max or Pro models. But that’s a pretty good deal considering how rarely Apple puts things on sale.

There’s also a larger 16.6” M1 MacBook Pro, on sale at B&H right now, but for only $50 off. This model is a more recent 2021 MacBook, so there isn’t much in the way of discounts. But it has the 10-core M1 chip and not the stock 8 core models above and has 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD drive.

If the game was poker, and the bet has come around, it’s a safe bet to always wait. The simple fact is, that while their sales do provide a modicum of savings, they aren’t that good, and users can always check the refurbished site to try and get a bit better of a deal.

Either way, something new is coming, it’s only a matter of when. The only question is, do you want to pay now or pay later?
