There’s a New 5 Bay NAS from Synology for Content Creators

Synology has announced a new desktop-sized NAS, network-attached storage. This 5 Bay Synology DS1522+ Diskstation is designed to sit on or underneath a desk, and although it has a relatively small form factor, can be upgraded to house up to 15 hard drives for backup. The DS1522+ NAS also supports NVMe SSD caching and 10GbE networking.

Synology has been a fast-growing leader in network-attached storage over the last few years and has grown in popularity due to its unique backup strategy. Its NAS designs connect directly to the internet of the network through a 10 GB ethernet connection, and all backup is handled through an IP connection.

Many other NASs can be directly connected via USB-C or Thunderbolt, but this can represent a security issue to the main drive should the system be compromised.

By placing the NAS on the network as a separate device, the NAS can not only be sandboxed for added security, but the user can surf to the NAS and sync with it anywhere in the world.

The DS1522+ utilizes a 2.6 GHz AMD Ryzen R1600 Dual-Core processor with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM.

Other features include two nVMe SSD drives slots, 4 GB Ethernet ports, and support for up to 5 3.5/2.5″ SATA HDD/SSD Drive Bays. Synology says that the system can also support up to 15 drives with the company’s DX517 expansion system.

The DS1522+ is extremely fast, too, with Synology stating that they enjoy read/write speeds of over 736 MB/s and 796 MB/s respectively in Sequential mode.

The system also supports fast file sharing, syncing, streaming, and backup for multiple users, and several advanced intelligent monitoring tools including motion detection, a no idle zone, foreign object detection, and anomaly detection to cater to the most common surveillance scenarios.

Synology also says that the NAS can be used on a variety of platforms through a cross-platform configuration that enables users to backup their data no matter what operating system the computer is seeking backup uses. This translates to being able to operate in concert with platforms like Windows and macOS, and mobile platforms including Android, and iOS.

Linux can also be supported, although users have to have Samba installed on the Linux distribution.

The retail price of the Synology DS1522+ is around $700, with plugin drives sold separately.

That seems a bit high to not come with backup hard drives, but this gives the user control over the speed and configuration of whatever hard drives they choose. Synology is also a prosumer-level backup solution, with various levels of security, giving professionals peace of mind when it comes to backing up their portfolio.
