Atomos has announced that its Ninja Phone module, which converts your iPhone 15 or 15 Pro into a camera field monitor and recorder, has started shipping.
Previewed at NAB last spring, the Ninja Phone offers 10-bit ProRes and H.265 recording thanks to its video coprocessor and can record and monitor from a professional-grade cinema camera through HDMI.
“Ninja Phone is the perfect tool for video professionals who want to adopt a cloud workflow without a complex and expensive technology footprint,” says Atomos CEO and Co-Founder Jeromy Young.
And it’s great for the thousands of content creators who capture, store, and share video from their iPhone 15 Pro but aspire to work with professional cameras, lenses, and microphones. This is a real enhancement tool for creators on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube!”
Designed as a modular, two-piece system, the Atomos Ninja Phone has been designed to appeal to social media influencers and content creators who have cut their teeth capturing with a smartphone but desire to take their content to the next creative level.
With a dedicated video coprocessor and mounted case, a user’s iPhone 15 or 15 Pro can be transformed into an external video monitor-recorder which can encode the video from any incoming camera stream and output it to the cloud.
Original camera files can be saved on the user’s mobile device via USB-C Gen 3.2 or uploaded using the camera to cloud applications and a 5G or WiFi 6E connection.
While the Ninja Phone currently only supports Apple’s current generation of iPhone, it will also work with the iPad Pro, and there are plans to expand support to other smartphone models down the road.
“(Through the iPhone) Ninja users will have access to an OLED monitor screen, which, at 1600 nits, is by far the highest resolution, most capable HDR monitor that’s ever been available to them,” added Young, “It’s the perfect partner for many of the new, smaller format mirrorless cameras coming out of Japan.”
In addition to its brightness, the iPhone 15 Pro offers a 2,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio and support for DolbyVision HDR10, and HLT for up to 11 stops of dynamic range.
This makes the Ninja Phone module a professional-grade interface for using mobile devices as an integral part of the content creation process.
While there are consumer-grade modules out there, the Atomos Ninja Phone takes things to a professional level with greater performance and battery life.
The Ninja Phone uses standard Sony NP batteries, plus a battery eliminator interface or a USB-C connection to a power brick or 5V/3A connection. The module will also charge the iPhone and keep it topped off during all-day use.
Priced at $399 with free two-day shipping, the Atomos Ninja Phone module is finally shipping from Atomos Direct and its network of authorized resellers.
The Ninja Case for iPhone 15 Pro is also priced at $59. The module also comes with locking cables for secure cable management for both USB-C and HDMI cables.
While mobile filmmakers are looking to expand the quality of their content and make a breach into the professional level, the Atomos Ninja Phone makes a logical next step for not only looking the part but achieving it as well.
