How to Quickly Find People in Footage in Resolve 18

How to Quickly Find People in Footage in Resolve 18

Shawn Steiner September 25, 2022 Blog No Comments

There are now “AI” features in all types of software and apps. Blackmagic has started doing this as well with some of their additions to Resolve 18.

One of the neat tricks was the ability to analyze footage and recognize the individuals in each of your clips. Once the NLE has this information it can then smartly create bins with different individuals.

If you want to learn how to take advantage of this feature then you might be interested in this quick demo and tutorial from JayAreTV. Keep in mind that the neural engine tools are locked into the paid version of DaVinci Resolve Studio.

For a good example of when this could come in handy is during a wedding speech where you want to cut away to the people being mentioned in the speech. It can be a pain to scrub through all that footage to find a couple people.

Using this new auto-recognition engine in Resolve can save you some time.

Testing this out with a batch of stock footage he puts everything in a single bin. Then he simply selects everything, right-clicks, and selects Analyze Clip for People. Give it a minute to process and it’ll find and group the faces together.

Anyone who is detected multiple times gets put into its own group and anyone who is only seen once ends up in an other people bin. You can start naming all of these to make them easier to sort through.

You can go through the clips and manually sort any that weren’t grouped right. It seems that Resolve does have an issue with people in profile.

There is an improve grouping results button that will provide you with lower-confidence results and you can approve or deny whether they are accurate.

Now that everything is selected and grouped as you want you can see that in the metadata there is a people section that should have the names now.

You can now create a smart bin that reads the people metadata and contains certain names. This can be set to automatically be created in the preferences.

That’s about it for using this tool. Nice and easy as it should be.

Is this something that would be immensely helpful for your workflows?
