The details about Canon’s third-generation R6 Full Frame Mirrorless camera are gradually becoming clearer, with an expected release later this year.
Reports based on a wireless signal registration in Japan suggest that the R6 Mk. III could feature a redesigned stacked CMOS R3 image sensor.
This camera is designed to fit between the R5 Mk. II and Canon’s flagship R1.
However, we must consider whether these rumors hold any weight or if the R6 Mk. III will truly come equipped with impressive specifications.
The rumor originates from Canon Rumors, a prominent source for Canon-related news, so it should be taken with caution.
If the speculation proves correct, the third-generation R6 may include a full-frame 24 MP stacked CMOS image sensor and the DIGIC X with Accelerator.
This could enable 6K RAW video recording and support for Canon Log 2 and 3, along with Cinema Raw Lite as a viable option.
Additionally, features like C4K in Super 35 mode and XF-HEVC S and AVC S codecs may be included.
Reports suggest that the camera will be capable of recording 14-bit 6K RAW at up to 60 frames per second and offer high-speed 4K recording at rates of up to 120 fps.
The sensor should provide a readout speed that meets many performance benchmarks established by the R1 and R5 Mk. II.
It is also likely that the camera will feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with enhanced face/eye and head tracking capabilities.
If these features are confirmed, the R6 Mk. III could serve as a solid option between the higher-priced flagship and the more consumer-friendly R5 II.
However, Canon usually exercises caution when integrating higher performance specifications into mid-range products.
Given that the R6 Mk. II already oversampled 6K to produce 4 K60 video, there are concerns that many users seeking higher 8K capabilities might be left wanting more.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen who the R6 Mk. III will target prosumers or high-end amateur photographers.
Additionally, the R6 Mk. III is rumored to support collaborative image stabilization, enabling both the lens and sensor to work together to minimize camera shake up to 8.5 stops.

There are also indications that the R6 Mk. III will feature a new flip-out 3-inch LCD screen for greater flexibility in capturing different angles and accommodating selfie-style vlogging.
It’s reasonable to expect that Canon will retain the vari-angle feature for this purpose, and the standard OLED electronic viewfinder is likely to remain unchanged as well.

In terms of connectivity, the camera will reportedly support both 5.1 GHz and 2.4 GHz wireless connections, potentially including Bluetooth for remote operation through the Canon mobile app.
This information surfaced in the camera’s registration documents in Japan last October.
Regarding pricing, there are no definitive figures available at this time. However, it’s worth noting that the current R6 Mk. II has undergone a permanent price drop to $2,199, with instant rebates currently bringing it below $2,000.
This trend suggests that Canon might introduce the R6 Mk. III at a similar price point of around $2,499, but that is just an assumption.
As for the announcement date for the R6 Mk. III, it’s still uncertain, but many hope for a release in the early summer, just in time for Christmas.
In the meantime, the rebate on the R6 Mk. II makes it an attractive purchase at $1,999, especially with tariffs looming.
