Blackmagic has released a new camera update to enhance support for its larger URSA Cine 17K 65 and 12K LF cameras while also addressing several annoying bugs.
The conventional Cinema Camera 6K update also tackles issues that have frustrated users.
Although the 17K URSA 65 cinema camera isn’t yet available for shipping, the camera, along with its 12K URSA LF cousin, will benefit from a significant improvement in Camera OS version 9.5.1.

This update enhances image support for 65mm open gate recordings, refining the overall image quality and improving the performance of the sensors.
As a result, the cameras will capture better color and a wider dynamic range.
Additionally, fine-tuning during the production process promises to enhance the calibration of the large-format sensors in both models.

Additionally, Camera OS 9.5.1 fixes a playback issue that caused the wrong clip to play during media pool selection.
This bug, which affected users trying to review clips using thumbnails, required them to backtrack and attempt the selection again.
Camera operators and assistant personnel will appreciate the improved metadata support for focus pulling on cinema camera lenses that utilize the i/Data protocol.
This update offers quicker responsiveness and more accurate focus scale readouts, enabling smoother and more natural focus pulls during filming.

In other news, Blackmagic has also released an update for its standard Cinema Camera 6K. Update 9.5.2 resolves an issue that sometimes prevented certain CFExpress media cards from being recognized when inserted into the media card slot.
The update also installs the Blackmagic RAW Player, Blackmagic RAW Speed Test, Blackmagic RAW SDK, and Blackmagic RAW plugins.
Both Camera Updates 9.5.1 and 9.5.2 are highly recommended and are available on the Blackmagic Design Support website. Users should read the release notes thoroughly and ensure their camera is fully charged before performing the updates.
Lastly, in recent weeks, Blackmagic has published an updated list of compatible USB-C-based SSD drives for external RAW recording.
This list details the recommended USB-C drives capable of recording 6K Blackmagic RAW 5:1 at up to 50 fps and 5.3K Blackmagic RAW 5:1 at up to 60 fps.
Users can also find this list on, you guessed it, the Blackmagic Support Website.
