Sony Announces FX2 Hybrid Cinema Camera

Sony has just introduced the FX2, the latest addition to its FX line of cinema cameras.

Designed specifically for mobile-oriented content creators, this hybrid platform boasts several impressive features, including a tiltable electronic viewfinder.

The FX2 features a 33-megapixel full-frame backside-illuminated Exmor R image sensor that offers 7K oversampling with full pixel readout, and over 15 stops of dynamic range when using Sony’s S-Log3 codec.

This capability allows for fine detail in both highlights and shadows, providing a wide latitude for color grading.

It supports Log shooting in various modes, including Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO, catering to diverse production needs.

The camera incorporates advanced focusing features such as real-time Recognition autofocus, which quickly identifies and tracks various subjects, including animals, birds, humans, and vehicles.

An auto mode simplifies subject acquisition, while tools like FB compensation and autofocus assist help address common focus breathing issues, allowing for more precise image capture.

Moreover, the FX2 includes Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode for smooth, steady handheld shooting during motion, along with a Framing Stabilizer function that keeps the subject centered in the frame.

Content creators can import up to 16 custom LUTs for on-camera previews, facilitating precise color monitoring on set based on preestablished color schemes.

Camera operators can create cinematic looks in-camera by using S-Cinetone and a wide array of Picture Profiles and Creative Presets, including 1.3x and 2.0 anamorphic settings with de-squeeze display functions.

The FX2 enables continuous recording for up to 13 hours in 4K at 60p, with variable frame rate settings reaching up to 120 fps for maximum slow-motion effects of 2.5x, thanks to its internal cooling fan and heat-dissipating design.

Notably, the FX2 features a high-resolution 3.68 million-dot tiltable electronic viewfinder with a deep eyepiece, combined with a vari-angle touchscreen LCD.

This setup gives camera operators multiple options for framing shots.

The BIG6 home screen provides access to essential shooting metadata, including FPS, ISO, shutter angle, presets, white balance, and ND filter settings.

Conveniently arranged controls on the top panel and grip allow for easy adjustments.

The camera’s dual XLR/TRS inputs enable 4-channel 24-bit digital audio capture.

Additional features include SD and CFExpress Media card slots, HDMI external recording at up to 4K 120 fps with 10-bit 4:2:2 color and 16-bit RAW support. It also offers dual-band WiFi and live streaming capabilities.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony FX2 Cinema Camera will be available for preorder starting May 29th for a retail price of $2,699 (body only) or $3,099.99 with the optional XLR handle.

Shipping is expected to begin in early August 2025.

Overall, even though the FX2 features a 7K sensor, it ultimately downscales to a 4K image.

In a world increasingly dominated by 6K and 8K resolutions, this may seem underwhelming.

However, considering Sony’s history of providing updates and enhancements through firmware, there is hope that this sensor will eventually deliver the higher resolution it deserves – and hopefully soon.
