DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1 Brings Apple Vision Pro Support, Keyframe Overhauls, and More

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1, a significant update that is free for existing customers and available for download from the company’s support site.

One of the most notable features is native support for Apple Vision Pro spatial and immersive workflows on macOS, but this is just the beginning.

This new version focuses heavily on immersive video projects, offering a long list of new features and improvements.

Users can organize, edit, and render immersive content for playback in the headset, with real-time monitoring over 5G Wi-Fi.

Editors can now create immersive projects and preview them directly using the Apple Vision Pro headset, taking advantage of Apple Spatial Audio, now supported in Fairlight.

Animation and editing tools have received a significant upgrade.

Keyframe handling is now smoother and more consistent, with refined easing behavior, improved curve visibility, and the ability to adjust curves directly from the timeline.

Keyframes can also extend beyond clip edit points, and users can set shortcuts to switch between curve and keyframe views.

Text workflows benefit from MultiText enhancements, which include character-level styling, paragraph alignment, and indentation, as well as CSV import for automatic column-aligned layouts.

New timeline rulers, custom guides, and snapping features provide editors with precise control when laying out graphics, subtitles, or multiple visual layers.

In Fusion, there are new immersive viewer options, a new patcher tool, and Magic Mask v2.

Users can now optionally downscale compositions to timeline resolution for performance improvements.

Colorists will appreciate better safe-area displays, on-the-fly timeline resolution switching, and ACES 2.0 DCTL support.

Fairlight has also received major upgrades, including new 32-bit floating-point recording, accurate waveforms during capture, faster Audio Assistant analysis, and ambience controls in Dialogue Matcher.

Playback now supports half-speed review, and mixer navigation has been streamlined with new selection shortcuts.

Resolve FX introduces two standout additions: ColorTone Diffuser, which simulates optical diffusion filters for a low-contrast, cinematic appearance, and Split Tone, allowing for nuanced control over color tints in shadows and highlights for creative grading.

On the codec and I/O side, Resolve now supports Blackmagic RAW 5.0, faster decoding for URSA Cine 12K LF and related clips, WebP image handling, MXF Op1A H.264/H.265 encoding, Samsung APV decoding, and improved bitrate controls for Windows.

A new Tencent Video Delivery preset has also been added.

General workflow and housekeeping improvements include upgraded layouts for small screens and vertical videos, per-system bin layout retention, enhanced scripting APIs with asynchronous JavaScript promises, a Shift+Space effects search dialog accessible across pages, and better multi-user project handling.

The minimum system requirements have been updated to include macOS 14 Sonoma, Windows 10 Creators Update, and Rocky Linux 8.6 as the baseline operating systems.

GPU support and memory requirements will vary based on Fusion usage.

The DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1 Update is available now from the Blackmagic Support Site. It’s important to remember, however, that while the new release maintains project library compatibility with version 19.1.3, projects opened or created in 20.1 won’t open in the older version, so full library and individual project backups are strongly recommended before upgrading.

So if you’ve been looking to add immersive video to your workflow, Blackmagic has you covered in Resolve 20.1.
