Sony’s Latest Firmware Brings Greater Flexibility to the A1 II

Sony has released firmware update 3.0 for its flagship A1 II full-frame mirrorless camera, delivering refinements aimed at streamlining workflow and making the camera more intuitive for both photographers and filmmakers.

The A1 II, capable of capturing 8K video and still images at 30 frames per second, now offers a more ergonomic way to easily read on-screen metadata while switching between landscape and portrait aspect ratios or pausing mid-shoot.

But there are even more improvements to streamline the camera’s overall workflow.

A key highlight is the automatic horizontal and vertical display switching. As the camera changes orientation, the on-screen layout and metadata adjust instantly, making critical information easier to read during fast-paced shooting.

Sony has also improved the functionality of the A1 II’s physical mode dials, allowing photographers to switch between shooting, drive, and focus modes without diving into settings, keeping the focus on composition and timing.

Video creators benefit from new clip tagging options: OK, NG (No Good), and KEEP. These markers allow post-production teams to quickly identify the best takes and flag unusable footage during import.

Additional tools include the ability to name files during review, create custom folder names for better organization, and manage media across both card slots simultaneously. Users can now rate or delete files from both cards at the same time.

For those who purchase an optional paid license, the update will soon enable Scan and Tag, Photo Crop, and Volume Photography Commands.

The license also adds the ability to display the camera’s internal date and time rather than the server’s when viewing images captured with the Write Digital Signature function, part of Sony’s Camera Authenticity Solution.

Other functional enhancements include:

  • The ability to cancel scheduled image transfers during FTP uploads.
  • New FTP automation options to schedule transfers of protected still images or videos from the FTP Upload Preset.
  • Automatic protection of stills transferred via FTP.
  • Sony has also updated wireless security by dropping WPA and WEP protocol support. The A1 II will now require WPA2 or WPA3 encryption for all future wireless connections.

While firmware 3.0 doesn’t bring a flood of headline-grabbing features, its refinements focus on speed, usability, and a more intuitive shooting experience.

These updates aim to keep creators in the moment – whether they’re chasing split-second sports action, framing cinematic video, or capturing a decisive still image – while reducing the time spent navigating settings and menus.
