At IBC 2017 Teradek are showing off their enticing iOS monitoring solution SERV Pro aiming to solve one of the most frustrating problems that small crews and solo shooters need to tackle in the field when it comes to proper video monitoring in real-time.
Designed to be used for single or multi-cam productions, the SERV Pro aims to bring wireless video monitoring to everyone on set with an iOS smartphone or tablet. The SERV Pro can achieve this through efficient H.264 compression schemes which maintain a high standard of video quality without requiring the massive bandwidth of uncompressed video solutions.
In essence, the SERV Pro is a small hardware streaming device that allows up to ten iOS devices to receive a live HD feed wirelessly from your camera while shooting in the field. This is meant to be a compelling alternative to much more expensive and much more complicated zero delay wireless systems. The SERV Pro connects to your camera using either HDMI or 3G-SDI and then sends a compressed video feed to the connected iOS devices while utilizing 2.4/5 GHz bands or Ethernet. The unit can support up to 10 simultaneous connections, whether connected wirelessly or directly to the local network.
To use the SERV Pro with your IOS devices, you will need to download the company’s free proprietary streaming app VUER. The mobile application is essentially a complete cinematographer’s toolset in the palm of your hands, with features such as focus peaking, false color, and vectorscopes. It can support up to four SERV Pro feeds at a time while maintaining 1080p quality with a delay of two frames. Moreover, multiple SERV Pro units can be linked over the same network for multi-camera monitoring functionalities.
