Closer Look at the Blazing Fast G-Drive Mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 SSD

One major drawback when working with footage at or beyond 4K is that, inevitably, you’ll have to deal with very large file sizes. Therefore, you’ll need some reliable external storage devices with enough space that also should be able to sustain fast read and write speeds while editing.

So, if you are a video editor who is currently in the market for an extremely fast portable drive to fulfill your creative needs while working on the go, then look no further. The G-Drive Mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 SSD by G-Technology boasts blazing fast speeds of up to a whopping 2800 MB/s, plus it’s built like a tank. In the video below, Jeff from 9to5Mac will demonstrate how fast is this SSD in a real-world scenario.

With storage running at these transfer rates, the G-Drive Mobile Pro SSD lets you edit multi-stream 8K footage at full frame rate, quickly render VR projects and experience them at their full resolution, or transfer up to 1TB of content in seven minutes or less.

The drive uses high-end technologies to deliver the fastest speeds possible, taking advantage of a flash storage module manufactured by SanDisk. Regarding read/write performance, Jeff tested the drive on a MacBook Air 2018 laptop via the Thunderbolt 3 port. Synthetic benchmarks were then run using three different apps.

In the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, the drive averaged a read speed of 2440 MB/s and a write speed of 2130 MB/s. In QuickBench, it produced read speeds of 2706 MB/s and write speeds of 2361 MB/s. Finally, the AJA Disk Speed test showed read/write results of 2502 MB/s and 2260 MB/s respectively.

Even in real-world use, the G-Drive performed surprisingly well, particularly inside of Final Cut Pro X. Playback was smooth and Jeff experienced no issues even when handling large video files. In fact, the drive was so fast that its read and write speeds outperform the internal SSD of the 2018 MacBook Air itself.

For those concerned about the G-Drive’s reliability, the unit has a protective aluminum core that helps prevent overheating while maintaining high levels of performance. The custom enclosure, on the other hand, insulates the drive to prevent the exterior from heating up while in use.

Additionally, its rugged design provides shock-resistant storage that protects against drops up to 9.8′ and a crush-proof rating of up to 1000 lb.

While the G-Drive is definitely an option to consider for fast external SSD storage, it does come at a price. The product starts at roughly $229 for the 500GB version, with Samsung’s comparable X5 SSD coming in slightly cheaper.

Nevertheless, the G-Drive Mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 is a sturdily built blazing fast SSD that can handle massive workloads while providing quick access to your media, especially when you need to deal with 4K, 5K, or even 8K footage on a regular basis.
