Sennheiser has just announced the second generation of the popular for over a decade among vloggers and run-and-gun videographers MKE 400 shotgun microphone. Unlike its predecessor, the brand new model comes with built-in shock absorption and integral wind protection, thus eliminating the need to carry around a cumbersome windscreen and suspension system.
The Sennheiser MKE 400 II also offers a 3-stage gain control and a low-cut filter so you can optimize the sound of your recording right at the mic. Other noteworthy features include a super-cardioid polar pattern, automatic on/off function, long battery life, and a headphone monitoring port. The unit is just 5″ long while weighing in at only 3.3 ounces.
For further flexibility on set, the Sennheiser MKE 400 II comes with two locking 3.5mm audio cables – one features a standard TRS plug for compatibility with cameras and DSLRs, while the other utilizes a TRRS plug to connect with your smartphone or tablet.
MKE 400 II users will also get a dedicated furry windshield which can provide further protection from wind noise when shooting outdoors. The bottom of the MKE 400 features a camera shoe mount, ensuring simple attachment to your camera or shoe-equipped stand or gimbal.
The mic’s adjustable sensitivity, on the other hand, provides three settings to optimize audio signal volume.
The -20 dB setting is ideal when capturing loud sounds that could distort your recording whereas the 0 dB position is recommended for normal dialogue levels or when using a high-quality external preamp.
You can even select +20 dB when recording quiet sources or using cameras with low input sensitivity. To power the unit, you’ll need two AAA batteries which should keep the microphone running for up to 100 hours.
