Canon Announces Development of the Full-Frame EOS R3 Mirrorless Camera

In a similar manner to the EOS R5 announcement back in Feb 2020, Canon has just unveiled the development of a brand new full-frame mirrorless camera that will fit between the EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III siblings. The upcoming Canon EOS R3 will join the current lineup of the EOS R full-frame mirrorless series boasting superb AF performance and speed, especially when it comes to fast-moving subjects.

It also becomes clear that the newcomer will sport Canon’s first full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with a back-illuminated design which is expected to produce less rolling shutter while offering continuous electronic shutter still-image shooting up to 30fps. No word on any particular video capabilities yet, but we could speculate that the flagship camera will shoot some form of 8K video allegedly similar to the EOS R5.

It has also been reported that the brand new camera will have weather and dust-resistant body design with an integrated vertical grip section on the side. Plus, Canon is developing a new Mobile File Transmitter application for iOS and Android devices that will be available soon.

Additionally, the flagship EOS R3 will be using deep learning technology to enhance eye and body detection AF capabilities. What’s more, the electronic viewfinder of the camera will offer the ability to select the initial area for AF tracking by simply looking directly at the viewfinder location using Eye Control AF2 and Servo AF.

The camera will also offer Face Detect + Tracking to autofocus on moving subjects around the entire active AF area in the viewfinder depending on where your eye is looking at.

Canon EOS R3 Highlights

  • Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Eye Control AF, Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Subject Tracking with Deep Learning
  • Continuous Shooting Up to 30 fps
  • Integrated Vertical Grip
  • Weather-Sealed Construction

Finally, Canon announced three brand new RF lenses, the RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM, RF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM, and RF 600mm F4L IS USM, which will perfectly complement the flagship Canon EOS R3 once it officially hits the shelves.

It’s still unclear, though, when the latter will happen, nor we know how much the all-new mirrorless model will cost. Information regarding the release of the product will be announced at a later date.
