The Samsung T7 Shield SSD Promises Ruggedly Fast, Cool Storage

Samsung has announced their next-generation external SSD drive, with an innovative pocket-sized design that will keep your data secure, while the drive stays cool. The drive offers plug-and-play support and is designed for a mobile-centric generation that is harder on their gear.

With the dimensions of an average credit card and less than an inch thick, the T7 Shield weighs less than 100 grams. With that small of a cross-section, there isn’t much room for heat management considerations, but Samsung claims that the design utilizes an “innovative surface material called “Dynamic Thermal Guard,” which minimizes heat dissipation and keeps the drive cool and the data flowing with no lost packets.

“When it comes to performance and durability, creative professionals and consumers need the confidence to store on the go knowing that their data is better protected even if the device is dropped, exposed to water or dust, or used in the heat,” said Mary Peterson, Vice President, IT and Enterprise Solutions, Samsung Electronics Canada.

Utilizing Samsung’s in-house designed NAND flash technology, the T7 Shield enjoys a file transfer rate of up to 1,050 MB/s read speeds and up to 1,000 MB/s write speeds, twice that of the previous generation of the T series and nearly 10 times faster than conventional spinning drives. At that speed, content creators can edit directly from the drive without ingesting into their computers.

The T7 Shield is also file encrypted at the hardware level, enabling users to password protect the drive and lock it with AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

Samsung also states that the T7 is manufactured to take a beating, being shock resistant from a fall of up to three feet, while it’s rated at IP65 for dust and water resistance. But just in case, the drive does come with a limited three-year limited warranty.

The T7 Shield is compatible with PC, Mac, Android devices, gaming consoles, and will even work with cameras that support SSD drive recording. Included in the box are USB Type C-to-C and Type C-to-A cables.

Available in Blue, Black, and Tan, the Samsung T7 Shield sells for just under $135 for 1TB and $240 for 2TB.
