Viltrox Calls New 13mm Ultra Wide Lens a Vlogging Beast

Camera lens manufacturer Viltrox has listed a new 13mm F1.4 Ultra Wide autofocus lens on Indiegogo. The new lens is designed to appeal to photographers and content creators for vlogging, landscape, architectural, and astral photography. The lens is so light, that Viltrox is calling it vlogging beast.

“Is there a lens with a very versatile focal length that can be used in a wide range of applications from vlog to landscape to street photography, which greatly reduces the user’s luggage burden,” asks the campaign on Indiegogo. “Therefore Viltrox has developed (the) AF 13mm F1.4 XF mount, consistently high quality, lightweight size, and cost-effectiveness.”

The main advantage of the new 13mm f1.4 is that it has a wide enough field of view to enable content creators to keep themselves in the frame, and a fast enough aperture rating to provide for very nice bokeh.

Viltrox states that the lens has been very popular with Fuji X photographers, and they decided to make the lens available in Sony E mount and Nikkor Z-mount APS-C options to meet demand.

The 13mm F1.4 is constructed with a large aperture design, with 14 lens elements in 11 groups, consisting of two aspherical lens elements, and four ED low dispersion elements, and a pair of high refractive index lens elements.

The result is an aperture range of 1.4-16, a close-up distance of .22m and minimal lens distortion or chromatic aberration. The equivalent focal length on a full-frame camera is about 20mm.

The highest resolution goes from edge to edge and provides for natural bokeh and dispersion control while maintaining excellent color reproduction.

For video, the quiet STM+ lens focusing motor keeps focusing noise to an absolute minimum, with eye detection autofocus in supported camera models, and slight focus breathing.

Weighing in at just 14 ounces (420g-455g), the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 is light for use as a vlogging lens, or to add to an APS-C camera to a drone for aerial photography. Its f1.4 aperture setting is also ideal for capturing low light for astral photography as well.

Listed on Indiegogo with an early bird price of $300 for a limited number of backers, but there’s also a special Indiegogo rate of $365, and $386. Those interested in backing the campaign can check it out at their Indiegogo campaign page.
