DJI Addresses Mavic 3 Stability Issues with Firmware Update

Firmware updates are meant to add new features or fix bugs that were missed. But all too often, they can also break a function. In the end, firmware is a complicated set of instructions and those instructions can sometimes accidentally be incomplete as changes are made.

This became true with a recent update to the DJI Mavic 3 drone, which began to have problems with its IMU after the v 1.00.07 update. The update also provides a few other new features including support for ProRes 422 and 422LT, and the ability to shoot Raw still images in the telephoto camera.

The IMU, or inertial measurement unit, is a sensor that reports force, angular rate, and orientation data provided by the drone’s accelerometers, gyroscopes, and other sensors.

The IMU is essentially the sensor that keeps the drone stable while flying. In the .07 update, the ability to report this data must have become corrupted during the calibration routine, thereby making flying the drone more difficult to manage.

Version 1.00.08 fixes that problem. DJI recommends that once drone owners download and install the new firmware, they recalibrate the drone so that the IMU can once again provide accurate readings. From there, a recalibration is only required with additional firmware updates.

DJI also recommends that users of the RC-N1 remote control, and the RC Pro Remote control, update to firmware v04.13.0600 and v03.01.0800 respectively, as well as update their DJI Fly app to v1.6.4 for both iOS and Android platforms.

The update can be accomplished through the DJI Fly app (so install that one first) or through the DJI Assistant software on your PC. Here’s a video on how to do the update:

Should the update fail, DJI recommends restarting the drone, remote controller, and apps and attempting the installation again. More information on how to update the Mavic 3 can be found on DJI’s website.
