Sigma Announces 18-50mm F2.8 X-Mount Zoom for Fuji Cameras

Sigma has added a new 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Zoom lens for the Fuji X-Mount mirrorless camera system. The lens offers a 35mm full frame equivalent of 27-75mm and is identical to the same variants currently available for Sony E-Mount and Leica/Panasonic L-Mount lens systems.

Constructed of thirteen elements organized in ten groups, with three aspherical elements and one super-low dispersion (SLD) element, the 18-50mm has a minimum focusing distance of just under five feet (12.1cm) at 18mm and just under twelve feet (30cm) at the farther end of the focal length or 50mm.

The lens offers a seven-bladed aperture iris which should provide for a somewhat rounded bokeh. It also sports a 55mm front lens filter thread.

As Sigma’s first APS-C-sized Contemporary model zoom, the 18-50mm F2.8 marks a departure from the first three prime lenses in the X-mount catalog.

Yet, with a constant F2.8 aperture rating throughout the entire zoom range, the lens is fast enough for low-light performance and consistent depth of field.

Built into the architecture of the 18-50mm F2.8, Sigma has developed a special control algorithm that provides for autofocus speed optimization and communication of lens metadata for high-speed autofocus.

The lens also offers continuous autofocus mode, as well as an in-camera aberration when using a supported Fujifilm camera.

The lens mount is rubber-sealed, providing all-weather protection in a variety of environments, but stop short of saying it is “weather sealed.” More likely, it’s just weather resistant, meaning that users are better served to wrap the lens to protect it in more extreme conditions.

Overall dimensions translate to 2.4 inches in diameter (62mm) by three inches long (77mm) with a weight of 10 ounces (285g). This makes the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Zoom a valuable main lens for shooting out in the field, and easy to carry when using another lens in its stead.

Sigma has also announced a mount conversion service for E-mount and L-Mount lenses, enabling users to make the jump to an X-mount system, if desired.

Sigma lists the retail price of the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary X-Mount Zoom lens at $549 USD and it will be available from authorized retail partners beginning in early December 2022.
