DJI Launches Mavic 3 Pro Drone with New Triple Camera Array

DJI has formally announced the DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, which the company declares as their flagship drone for a new era.

The Hasselblad camera on the Mavic 3 Pro has the same 20-megapixel micro four-thirds image sensor found in the previous DJI Mavic 3, with a 24mm f2.8-11 wide angle lens.

But that stock lens is joined by twin telephoto lenses to expand the camera’s focal length dramatically.

“The Mavic 3 Pro’s triple camera combination gives users the ability to switch between shot compositions with just one tap,” said Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director at DJI, “allowing content creators a wider variety of shots in less time than ever before. We can’t wait to see the end result of how people use the drone to alter the viewers’ perception of space and distance.”

Triple Camera Array

This new triple camera array on the Mavic 3 Pro is the world’s first for a drone and includes a 24mm Hasselblad camera being joined by 70mm and 166mm telephoto focal lengths.

The camera has an ISO range of between 100-6400 in both still and video modes and has a dynamic range of up to 12.8 stops.

DJI has also included 12-bit RAW -D-Log M video and ProRes video modes (with Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422, and Apple ProRes 422 LT encoding) in the principal camera for capturing 5.1K Raw video, plus DCI 4K video at up to 60 frames per second for normal playback, and up to 120 frames per second in slow motion.

Meanwhile, the secondary 70mm camera uses a Type 1 1/1.3 inch CMOS image sensor paired with a 3x optical zoom, which can capture either 12 or 48-megapixel still images, and 4K video of up to 60 fps.

Finally, the third, 166mm telephoto camera has an f3.4 aperture and a video rate of 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, or 12 mp stills with a digital zoom of up to 28x.

The drone utilizes DJI’s O3+ transmission system, which provides a live feed in 1080p at 60 frames per second up to a maximum distance of 9.3 miles (15km). Though it’s important to remember that Federal regulations require a drone to be kept within line of sight at all times.

Hasselblad Natural Color Science

The Hasselblad camera array uses the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution color science for more accurate color capture without the need for any post-processing.

DJI states that “even in high-contrast scenarios, like sunrises and sunsets, (the drone) delivers natural color gradations with delicate details for a full-spectrum visual experience.

The camera also has a 1TB SSD drive on board which is capable of “light speed” data transfer of up to 10 Gbps when connected to a computer.

Hi-Speed QuickTransfer uses WiFi 6 to wirelessly transfer video at up to 80 MB per second. Using DJI LightCut on a smartphone enables content creators to edit video directly from the drone without transferring the footage, another first.

Advanced Flight Modes

It contains Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing and Advanced Pilot Assistance with eight wide-angle vision sensors to ensure a safer flying experience.

DJI has also packed in an automatic flight route generator called the Waypoint Flight system, which uses pre-programmed waypoints to generate a route in coordination with the obstacle avoidance data, as well as an advanced return-to-home feature.

There are also Intelligent Flight features including Cruise Control, master shots, 100MP Lossless panorama, and quick shot modes.

The drone has an expanded flight window of up to 43 minutes flight time before needing to land and recharge. The drone is also compatible with DJI Goggles including the Goggles Integra and Goggles 2, plus the DJI RC Motion 2 flight controller.
