Nikon has released a firmware update to breathe new life into the Z6 II and Z7 II full-frame mirrorless cameras.
This update, version 1.70, adds support for new power zoom lenses, enhances language options, and addresses various user-reported issues.

A notable feature in this update is the compatibility with power zoom lenses, such as the NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR and the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ Lens.
These units allow for smooth electronic zooming, which is particularly useful for videographers using handheld gimbals or drones, as it eliminates the need for rebalance when zooming at extreme focal lengths, thus saving setup time.

Additionally, while these power zoom lenses are designed for electronic zooming, this firmware update enables users to manually control the zoom function through the camera’s function buttons or via the physical external ring.
This provides greater tactile control for camera operators, whether the camera is handheld or stationary.

Version 1.70 also includes support for the Russian language (русский), which is noteworthy given recent political circumstances affecting trade due to the conflict in Ukraine.
The firmware addresses several issues reported by users, including:
- The shutter release sometimes becomes disabled, or the frame advance rate drops after moving the focus point using the [Touch AF] feature.
- The playback display unintentionally switched to the shooting display when the [Prioritize viewfinder (2)] monitor mode was selected.
- The focus point occasionally is not being displayed after reactivating the standby timer in the [Prioritize viewfinder (2)] monitor mode.
- Remote camera shutter releases are becoming unavailable in synchronized release when using wireless remote controllers.
Download and Installation:
Firmware version 1.70 is available for both the Z6 II and Z7 II and can be downloaded from the Nikon Download Center website.
