SIGMA Adds to Art Lens Line with new 17-40mm F1.8 Zoom

SIGMA has launched a new addition to its popular Art Lens line: the 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art zoom lens.

This release marks the first APS-C lens in nearly a decade and is specifically designed for crop sensor mirrorless cameras.

As the spiritual successor to the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens for DSLR cameras, the new 17-40mm Art lens boasts an improved optical design that enhances brightness and resolution.

It delivers fast and flexible performance, making it an excellent choice for content creators seeking a cinematic edge at an affordable price.

Equipped with high-speed, silent linear focusing motors and minimal focus breathing, this compact lens ensures versatility in various shooting situations.

Weighing approximately 30 percent less than its predecessor, the 17-40mm F1.8 is more compact while still maintaining the same large aperture for outstanding low-light performance.

The lens features 17 elements arranged in 11 groups, including four super low dispersion elements and four aspherical elements, alongside an eleven-bladed aperture that produces a pleasing, cinematic bokeh.

With a 39.1 to 79.7-degree angle of view and a minimum focusing distance of 11.1 inches (28 cm), the lens offers a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8.

Additional features include an inner zoom mechanism, an aperture ring with a clock and lock switch, a focus mode switch, and a high-response linear actuator.

The lens effectively suppresses minimal focus breathing during focus and angle of view changes, allowing for smooth, natural-looking focus pulls during video capture.

It also delivers quiet, precise focusing adjustments for still photography. Its lightweight design makes it ideal for shooting on a gimbal or for selfie-style vlogging.

The dual AFL buttons can be customized for any function in the camera menu, providing quick access to preferred features without needing to look away.

These buttons offer a tactile feel on both the top and side of the lens, making them easy to use in either portrait or landscape orientation.

For L-Mount users, the manual focus ring allows adjustments for linear and non-linear focusing, depending on the required shooting range.

Thanks to the inner focusing mechanism, the overall length of the lens remains constant, meaning that gimbals do not need to be rebalanced when adjusting the focal length.

The lens has a 67mm filter diameter and is compatible with APS-C systems, making it perfect for travel, everyday photography, and mobile content creation.

SIGMA also offers this lens in various mount options, including Sony E-mount, L-Mount, Fujifilm X Mount, and Canon RF Mount, with the possibility of converting mounts as camera platforms evolve.

Pricing and Availability

The SIGMA 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art zoom lens will be available at a retail price of $919 starting July 10, 2025, for Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Leica L mounts. The Canon RF Mount version will be released in August.
