ARRI Takes ALEXA to the Xtreme with Updated Design and New High Performance Codec

ARRI has announced the release of a new full-frame cinema camera, the ALEXA 35 Xtreme.

This model brings several updates along with a proprietary codec that enhances performance.

The new camera is equipped with an advanced image processor, faster memory, and improved frame rates, featuring the new ARRICore Codec that delivers higher resolution images at lower data rates.

At the core of the ALEXA 35 Xtreme is a newly designed sensor that allows for faster frame rates due to its larger memory capacity.

It can capture up to 330 frames per second and offers 17 stops of dynamic range. In Sensor Overdrive mode, the camera can achieve up to 660 frames per second, though this reduces dynamic range to 11 stops.

This capability enables high-speed photography without the need for specialized camera systems, even in balanced ambient light.

The camera also utilizes the next-generation ARRICore RGB codec, which optimizes image quality at lower frame rates, maintaining the same audio and image textures found in the original ALEXA 35 workflow.

Users will benefit from five times longer prerecording buffers, allowing for up to 30 seconds in 4.6K Open Gate or a full five minutes of prerecording time in ProRes 422 HQ.

ARRI has redesigned the internal power system of the camera to save up to 10% of power compared to the original ALEXA 35, which is particularly beneficial for shooting in remote locations where battery life is critical.

Additionally, WiFi connectivity has been improved for ease of use, speed, and reliability through the ARRI Camera Companion mobile app, which provides secure 5GHz connectivity with roaming support and auto-connect features.

The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is available in the same modular housing as the original ALEXA 35, meaning users can utilize all existing extensions, brackets, and accessories.

However, certain accessories, such as the ARRI CCM-1 and Hi-5, will require a forthcoming update for compatibility.

Three Modular Sets, Two Licensing Tiers

The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is offered in three configurations: the Entry Set, Operator Set, and Production Set. There is also a Premium Bundle that supports LPL and PL mount add-ons.

The camera features two licensing tiers: the Base configuration, which includes existing features with options for Permanent, Annual, Monthly, and Weekly subscription levels, and the Premium License, which unlocks additional features.

Pricing and Availability

ARRI has priced the ALEXA 35 Xtreme similarly to the existing ALEXA 35 models. The preorder price for the Xtreme Base Entry Set, which supports LPL/PL mounts, is $54,590.

The Operator Set, which supports PL mount and MVF-2, is listed at $61,080, while the Production Set can be preordered for just under $67,000.

For the premium tier, the Premium Operator set is available for just under $82,000, and the Production Premium Set is priced just over $86,000.

To ensure that current ALEXA 35 users aren’t left out, ARRI offers a conversion option for existing ALEXA 35 Base, ALEXA 35 Premium, or ALEXA 35 Live cameras to the Xtreme configuration for $15,900. Existing feature licenses can also be transferred to the new Xtreme configuration.

Shipping is expected to begin in the next few weeks, with upgrades available at authorized service centers later this month.
