Blackmagic Camera Update 3.3 adds Improved WB and Sensor Response to Lens Shading (aka Magenta Issue)

Earlier today, Australian camera/post-production budget gear maker Blackmagic Design released their latest firmware update called Camera Update 3.3, which adds some significant improvements including improved white balance and sensor response to lens shading for URSA Mini 4.6K, as well as improved saturation when recording in Video dynamic range and improved Film to Video monitoring for all Blackmagic URSA Mini models and Blackmagic URSA Viewfinder. It will be interesting to see if this firmware update is a direct result of the “magenta gate” – a phenomenon where some URSA Mini 4.6K users were experience heavy magenta corners at certain f-stops. This issue has been well documented by user reports on both bmcuser.com here and the official BMD forum.

The strange thing is that not all URSA Mini cameras seem to be affected by this, but the “improved sensor response to lens shading” seems like a direct response to the magenta corners issue that most were experiencing. Once owners update their “affected” cameras and post footage we’d be able to see if this update has fixed the issue or not, as some argue that it’s not a specific lens issue, as it occurs with different lenses with some, but more an issue on the sensor level. See details of the update with additional new features and improvements below.
