All in all, we haven’t seen many new cameras at NAB 2017, but in return, there were plenty of other fantastic filmmaking tools and accessories worth noting. At this year’s trade show in Las Vegas, for instance, established audio gear maker Sennheiser showcases the first-ever waterproof GoPro Mic that allows sports enthusiasts and aspiring filmmakers to capture some high-fidelity sound with their favorite action camera out in the field.
The Sennheiser MKE2 microphone is completely waterproof up to 1-meter (3-feet) and comes with a dedicated wind protector that is capable of reducing any unwanted ambient noise even at speeds of up to 60 MPH.
For the time being, the MKE2 elements Action Mic can work only with the GoPro HERO 4 cameras, but Sennheiser states that some other models for the recent GoPro newcomers have been in the making as well. The omnidirectional microphone has a water protection rating of IPX7, which makes it submersible for up to 30 minutes.
To attach the unit to your GoPro HERO4 camera, you simply need to replace the original HERO4 back door of the protective housing with the one that comes with the MKE2 that also provides a GoPro connection for the HERO4. Additionally, the Sennheiser MKE2 element sports a flexible soft mounting system that helps tremendiously when it comes to reducing the distracting wind noise, plus the windscreen is utterly waterproof and can be easily cleaned under running water if needed.
