Canon Unveils PowerShot G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II Entry-Level Cameras

Canon just announced the latest entries to the PowerShot G series both aimed at content creators, vloggers, and photography enthusiasts. The G7 X III and G5 X II can shoot 4K UHD video up to 30fps while sharing the same DIGIC 8 image processor and 20.1-megapixel 1.0-type stacked sensor. The newcomers also offer high-speed continuous shooting and in-camera digital image stabilization.

Other than that, both models feature the same rear 3.0″ touchscreen with 180° upward tilting design that offers live view monitoring, image review, and menu navigation as well as Touch and Drag AF for easy focus point selection. Unlike the G7 X III, however, the G5 model boasts corner mounted pop-up OLED Electronic View Finder (EVF) with  2.36m dots and 100 percent coverage.

Other shared noteworthy features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, clean HDMI output for streaming and external recording, in-camera battery charging via the USB port as well as a vertical shooting mode tailored toward users who create content specifically for social media platforms.

Additionally, both cameras provide the same Auto and Manual modes for shooting video and stills alongside virtually the same menu design that can be found in Canon’s EOS cameras.

Even though both offerings look quite similar and do share almost the same functionality, there are some differences worth noting. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III, for instance, features a 4.2x optical zoom f/1.8-2.8 lens whereas the counterpart sports a brand new 5x f/1.8-2.8 lens. On the G7 model, there’s also a 3.5mm microphone input that is absent on the G5 X II. The G7 X model is also available in black and silver finish.

Regarding video capabilities, both units offer (4K) 3840 x 2160 recording at 25fps and 29.97fps as well as Full HD video 1920 x 1080 modes up to 120fps using MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 codec. A wide range of SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible) cards can be utilized for capturing video on board. Keep in mind, though, that there are movie recording limits of 9:59 min and a 29:59 min for 4K UHD and FULL HD modes respectively.

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III and G5 X II are already available for pre-order selling for $749 and $899. Both cameras should hit the market later in August.
