Even though there are some similar third-party accessories already available out there, it’s nice to see that Sony finally rolls out a dedicated wireless shooting grip for their popular line of mirrorless cameras. With its sleek design, the Sony GP-VPT2BT grip connects to your camera via Bluetooth and allows you to trigger the attached device wirelessly using the available built-in controls.
Furthermore, it doubles as a small stand and provides compatibility with various cameras, including the Sony A9 II, A9, A7R IV, A7R III, A7 III, A6600, A6400, A6100 and RX100 VII and RX0 II.
The Sony GP-VPT2BT grip attaches to your camera via the 1/4″-20 screw on top by simply turning a thumbwheel. The proprietary accessory weighs in at 7.6 oz (215 g) and can handle camera payloads of up to 53.0 oz (1.5 kg) while also being dust/moisture-proof.
Below the camera mount, there is a little flip switch that allows you to quickly rotate your camera 180 degrees and enter easily in selfie mode. You can also adjust your camera angle by using the switch on the side, thus tilting your camera up and down.
Overall, the Sony GP-VPT2BT features five buttons physical buttons. There are a Photo and a Movie button to take a picture or trigger video recording, a zoom button, a C1 button for accessing a custom function on your camera as well as a Lock switch.
Additionally, the shooting grip has an indicator light for further convenience giving you information while connecting and operating your camera.
It’s also worth mentioning that you’ll need to update your camera firmware first before using the grip. The Sony GP-VPT2BT is already available for pre-order with expected shipping in early February selling for $140.
