Blackmagic managed to keep their Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro under wraps right up until they launched it a few weeks ago. The cool part is it appears to have begun shipping already. With it getting in the hands of many creators they already checked on certain accessories – such as a super affordable Bluetooth focus controller.
Coming from Gimble Productions, this video shows off a cheap remote that will let you control the aperture/iris, focus, and start/stop recording. Remote follow focus and camera control no longer has to be an investment of hundreds of dollars and require a rig that adds bulk. With the 6K Pro and this device, you can enjoy remote control in no time at all.
The first thing to know is that this is an affordable remote from Chinese manufacturers. It’s a simple design with a dial, start/stop record button, and on/off switch. For the money (~$50-60) it is hard to complain if it works.
Being Bluetooth you’ll have to pair it to the camera, a nice option not often seen on cameras since most require proprietary tools or wires. It’s a little finicky as you’ll need software to get it paired. Once you do that it should work no problem going forward.
Obviously, the button will give you start/stop recording and that alone has a lot of value. Then, the dial can be double-clicked to provide iris/aperture control. Another double tap will bring you to focus control mode. It seems to work very well and even has an option to speed up focus response by holding down the dial while you turn the dial.
Note: You will need lenses that support autofocus and electronic iris/aperture control for the remote to function perfectly.
For gimbal work, remote operation, or just cause it’s cool to use, this is a good, cheap option for Blackmagic operators.
