Panasonic has been pushing the envelope of technology even further with its latest firmware updates for the Lumix S1, S1R, and S5 cameras. Some of the most notable improvements include 12-bit RAW support, L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome S photo styles, support for Lumix Hybrid Log-Gamma Photo (HLG), and more.
With this software upgrade, the Lumix S1, in particular, gets 12-bit RAW recording with full-frame 5.9K resolution up to 30fps in 16:9 widescreen along with 4K Raw recording in a cropped APS-C mode of up to 60fps in 17:9 widescreen and 3.5K with up to 50fps in anamorphic mode. Additionally, the update brings support for Blackmagic RAW video output to the Video Assist 12G HDR external video recorder.

It’s worth mentioning that the 12-bit RAW firmware update will be part of Panasonic’s optional Upgrade Software Key purchase program. So, if you already own the Lumix S1 or S5 models, you’ll have to shell out $200 to unlock all these new functionalities. Interestingly enough, new camera purchases will include the upgrades at no additional cost.
On top, the Panasonic S1 and S1R now will give users access to L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome S photo styles along with support for Lumix Hybrid Log-Gamma Photo (HLG) as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop. Once the plugin is installed on your computer, you’ll be able to edit an HLG photo (HDR still image) shot by LUMIX S Series cameras in Photoshop CC.
It is also possible to playback the saved image files as HDR photos on an HLG-corresponding monitor over an HDMI connection with a LUMIX S Series camera.
The firmware program version 2.1 for DC-S1, version 2.3 for DC-S5, and version 1.9 for DC-S1R will be available for download from the LUMIX Global Customer Support website on July 12th, 2021.
