Dell Announces New XPS 13 Laptop and 2 in 1 Tablet

Dell has updated the XPS13 with a slimmer design that promises to be lighter and more power-efficient. The 13.9mm laptop is nearly a millimeter thinner than the previous XPS13 and will be powered by the 9-watt 12th generation Intel Alder Lake Core Processor.

Dell will make the XPS13 available in two different 10-core configurations, an Intel i5-1230U or i7-1250U, both with Iris Xe graphics. RAM will be available at up to 32GB, and up to 1TB in storage. The i7 will also come with a 4K display.

In addition to making the laptop thinner and lighter, at 2.59 pounds, Dell has redesigned the motherboard to be nearly 2 times smaller than the previous XPS13, making it the most compact motherboard Dell has created. The smaller motherboard makes draws less energy and as such, requires only a single fan to keep the entire laptop cool.

Less power drain will also translate to longer battery life, with the new XPS13 promising all-day battery life of 12 hours, and the extra space is being taken up by a larger speaker, which will create higher-end audio during playback. Other features include a 720p webcam with infrared and RGB sensors for better low-light imaging.

The retail price is $999 for the Windows 11 edition or $949 for Linux.

The Dell XPS13 also comes in a 2-in-1 tablet configuration. Designed around a removable folio keyboard, to make it more like the IPad Pro, than a Windows PC, the XPS13 2-in-1 functions as both a laptop and a mobile-centric tablet computer.

The tablet sports a 13-inch DisplayHDR 400 supported LCD with 500 nits of brightness and a max resolution of 2880×1920. Other features include USB-C, a USB-C to USB-A adapter, and a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone dongle. There’s also 5G connectivity, a magnetic stylus with 50-day battery life, an 11-megapixel 4K rear-facing camera, and a five-megapixel front-facing 1080p webcam.

There’s no word on the retail price for the next gen XPS13 2-in-1, but the current hinged 2-in-1 sells for around $1319. Expect that the new model will hover around there. The expected shipping date is later this summer, though Dell isn’t being exact at the moment. Look for details to become more clear as the time gets closer.
