Tamron has just announced a new 17-70 f2.8 zoom lens. The 17–70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is designed for Fujifilm X-mount camera systems and is nearly identical in features to a similar Tamron lens released for Sony E-Mount cameras back in 2021.
Stating that the lens is the first standard fast aperture zoom for APS-C cameras, Tamron says the lens is constructed with sixteen lens elements in twelve groups, including two Aspherical glass molded elements, and a single hybrid aspherical element.
The arrangement has been designed to maintain high resolution from edge to edge with no fall-off or optical distortion.

The 17–70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD incorporates a nine-bladed circular aperture and has a range of F2.8 through F22, though the lens can also maintain a constant minimum aperture throughout the entire focal length.
The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.5” (19cm) at 17mm, and 15.4” (39cm) at 70mm.
The lens is optically stabilized with Tamron’s Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanics, which uses artificial intelligence and an onboard microprocessor for effectively dampening out camera movement in the lens array.
Tamron states that the stabilization doesn’t rely on a camera stabilization algorithm, bringing steadier performance to any camera with an X-mount.

Other features include a moisture-resistant design to combat condensation, the front lens element is treated with fluorine in order to be more resistant to the elements, and a full frame equivalency of 25.5-105mm field of view.
The lens also uses a proprietary Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive (RXD) motor for autofocus and suppression of focus breathing.
The lens has a very compact design, with an overall length of 4.72” (120mm), a diameter of 2.94” (75mm), and a weight of 1.17 lbs (530g). It also has a front filter thread size of 67mm.
With a retail price of $799, the lens is scheduled to ship on July 8, 2022. Fuji warns, however, that due to factors including the worldwide computer chip shortage, and the global pandemic, availability, and supply could be subject to change.
