Blackmagic Design Announces Next Gen 6K Pocket Cinema Camera

Blackmagic Design has announced an upgraded version of their popular low-cost 6K Pocket Cinema Camera. This model, known as the Pocket Cinema 6K G2, has a few improvements including several popularly requested features.

Usually, electronics undergo what’s called the “tick tock” development cycle. The Tick has several innovative features and an all-around new design, while the Tock is refinements and a few special features, or what are known as “fins.”

“Since the release of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, customers have been asking for some of the features to be added to the 6K model,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “We’ve been able to achieve even greater manufacturing efficiencies.

We are now able to release this new 6K model which adds an adjustable LCD touchscreen, longer battery life, support for the OLED viewfinder, and improved on-screen menus. We are excited to be offering these additional features that have been so popular with customers.”

The G2 is very similar in design to the original Pocket 6K, with 13 stops of dynamic range, dual native ISO, and an EF Lens Mount. But that’s where the two camera models begin to diverge.

The Pocket Cinema 6K G2 has added a pull-out tilting screen, improved power options for longer battery life, support for an optional electronic viewfinder, and incorporation of Blackmagic 5 color science.

The Super35 image sensor offers an HDR resolution of 6144 x 3456, and with the full frame EF mount, provides complete coverage from edge to edge on the sensor.

With the newly designed advanced operating system, users get an easier-to-use interface with a simple tap and swipe gestures for adjustment of settings, viewing recording status, and adding critical metadata to the file.

Camera operators can also control on-screen focus and exposure, 3D LUTs, HDR, metadata entry, timecode, and Blackmagic RAW settings.

Blackmagic’s Generation 5 color science is the same as their flagship 12K URSA Mini cinema camera, with accurate skin tones and a 12-bit dynamic gamma curve for more color details and dynamic range.

The color science is also optimized for use with Blackmagic RAW, so that color and dynamic range data directly from the image sensor are baked in through metadata. There’s also a gyrostabilizer in the camera that users can now access its metadata in post-production to better stabilize the image.

The 5” tilting LED display enables users to frame their image from more extreme camera angles, but the camera now supports an optional 1280 x 960 OLED electronic viewfinder to deal with brighter ambient lighting conditions.

Its 4-element glass diopter design is also capable of focus adjustment from -4 to +4, and a digital focus chart built into the camera menu enables dialing in perfectly sharp focus. The viewfinder will also tilt up to 70° and comes with 4 different eye cups for maximum comfort.

Lastly, the G2 now supports using larger Sony NP-F570 batteries for longer shooting times between charging. There’s also a locking DC power connection and an AC plug pack which will provide power to the camera and charge your batteries simultaneously.

Customers can also use a battery brick to provide power through USB-C when needed. And the camera is also compatible with Blackmagic’s optional camera grip, which adds power from two more batteries in its base. Lastly, the G2 has a new ND Filter interface for adding filters when needed.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K G2 is a bit more expensive, with an MSRP of $1995, which is not bad considering the improvements. It may not be worth selling an existing 6K camera to upgrade, but if you’ve been using a 4K model and want to get to the next level, it’s worth taking a look at.
