Nikon Announces Retro Z fc Black Mirrorless Camera with 40mm F2 Pancake

Nikon has just announced a special edition Nikon Z fc Black Edition Mirrorless camera and a Nikkor 40mm F2 SE pancake lens.

The APS-C-sized mirrorless system has a retro theme that is inspired by classic Nikon 35mm film cameras of the past.

“(The Z fc) evokes the essence of the legendary FM2 film camera, and this new design will surely appeal to those who appreciate subtle minimalism.”

Outside of its outward homage to the iconic FM2 35mm film camera, the Z fc Black Edition sports a 20.9-megapixel APS-C sensor with Eye Detect Autofocus.

It can capture 4K video at 30 frames per second and enjoys a vari-angle articulating LCD screen popular for vlogging. The camera also can switch between total automatic and full manual settings control.

Nikon has also released a new Nikkor Z 40mm F2 compact pancake-style lens which offers a 35mm DX equivalent of 60mm. The super small Z mount lens can be used on other Nikon APS-C cameras including the Z50 and Z30.

With six lens elements organized in 4 groups and a nine-bladed iris diaphragm, the 40mm Z F2 provides a pleasantly round bokeh with a shallow depth of field that Nikon says draws attention to the subject.

The lens has intricate knurling to keep with the overall retro concept of the special edition Z fc, and provides substantial grip for confident control.

The lens also has an Integrated customizable control ring that can be assigned to adjust focus, ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation.

The small-diameter STM autofocus motor has high torque, but Nikon says that video operators will appreciate its overall quiet operation without sacrificing the fast and accurate performance of the design.

The lens also has an electronic diaphragm for precise aperture control and stable exposure during continuous shooting. The lens also has a natural focus shift that will lock onto the subject and allows from close focusing all the way out to infinity.

The minimum focusing distance of .96 feet (.29m) and is sealed to be dust and moisture-resistant.

Nikon says that with these design elements in place, the 40mm Z F2 is “simply a fun lens to use” with fast enough low light performance to capture sharp street photos and candid portraits, but also delivers excellent video quality for content creators looking for a lightweight and compact camera on the move.

The limited edition Z fc mirrorless camera black edition is available in either a classic black and silver motif or the all-black design.

The conventional Z fc is also available in stylish colors including Amber Brown, White, Natural Gray, Sand Beige, Coral Pink, and Mint Green.

Retail price of the Nikon Z fc Black Edition is $1199.95 when paired with the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens. It will be available in late November exclusively through the Nikon Store.

Meanwhile, the Nikon ZfC Silver and Black model is available now for $956.95 worldwide.

The Nikkor Z 40mm F2 SE will be available in early 2023 for a retail price of $306.95 at authorized Nikon Dealers.
