Tamron’s Lens Utility App for Android Enables Lens Adjustments On Location

As promised last August, Tamron has taken its desktop Lens Utility software and ported it over to the Android mobile platform.

The app will enable photographers and filmmakers to configure Tamron lenses, and set focus distances using a mobile device while out in the field.

The app enables users to connect their Tamron lenses which have a USB-C port to their mobile device. Other functions of the Tamron Lens Utility include:

Tethered remote control. Users can use the Android app on their smartphones and tablets to configure the lens for tethered control, set two position focus pulls with up to three different focal points and preset the lens for a desired focus distance.

They can then use a simple tap of the screen to move to that preset configuration.

Custom switch programming. In addition, to focus pulling, the Lens Utility app can limit the autofocus search range between full and “limit” conditions in order to minimize hunting when using autofocus between multiple points of interest. Users can also select the focus ring function to adjust the aperture settings manually.

Moreover, there’s also an assigned custom functions feature, users can adjust focusing speeds and even set the focus rotation angle. Currently, however, the app does not support using your mobile phone to install updated firmware.

For that purpose, users will still have to rely on the Tamron desktop app. Tamron says this is so that the lens and utility can communicate “effectively” in order to properly install any updates without the danger of bricking the lens.

The Tamron Lens Utility Mobile for Android is available as a free download from the Google Play Store, but there are no plans to release an iOS version.

The current model of iPad supports USB-C, and there are USB-C to Lightning port adapters, but that doesn’t seem to be enough of an enticement for Tamron, which is odd considering most creative types rely on iPhones out in the field. But such is the life of platform wars.

More information on the Tamron Lens Utility can be found on the Tamron website.
