A pair of new models of the Sony A7C full-frame mirrorless camera line is about to hit the market, according to recent Sony Rumor sites. The Sony a7CR and a7CII will offer improved focusing, and AI-based facial recognition and processing features.
Known for being the smallest full-frame mirrorless camera in the Alpha 7 line to benefit from five-axis in-body image stabilization, Sony a7C uses an over-sampled 24.2 MP backside illuminated CMOS image sensor to provide 4K video with up to 15-stops of wide dynamic range.
And in these two new models, Sony has boosted the camera design with better color science and improved autofocus that relies on artificial intelligence to lock in a sharper image.
There isn’t much known about the Sony a7CR, except that it may borrow the 61 mp Exmor R CMOS sensor from the Sony a7RV, and will have AI-based facial recognition, and an improved autofocus system.
The sensor can capture 4K at up to 60 frames per second, with a 10-bit 4:2:2 Rec. 2020 HDR color gamut. The rumors also indicate that Sony has redesigned the camera’s menu system to improve navigation.
The image of the Sony a7CII is much clearer in terms of specifications. Insiders suggest that the a7CII may get an image resolution boost thanks to the same 33 MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor found in the Sony a7IV.
The new sensor also promises 10-bit 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, with Sony’s S-Cinetone Color Science.
The camera will also have a BIOINZ XR processor and an AI-based image processing unit to improve image sharpness and color accuracy.
Sony also provides expanded 759 focus points for real-time eye autofocus and lens breathing compensation which will work in tandem with its venerable five-axis in-body image stabilization.
Other features of a7CII will include a native ISO of 100-51200, a 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder, a 3-inch 1.03 million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD, and support for Sony’s creative appearance and beauty effects.
The camera will also be able to shoot continuous bursts of still images at up to 10 frames per second.
Outside of these few specs given “on the Q.T.,” there isn’t much more to be said about these two models save for a potential announcement window that could occur within the next two months.
More likely, if they’re coming this year, they should be announced just before the holiday shopping season, making a September-October launch window viable. So be on the lookout for discounts coming from Sony on previous models to clear out inventory.
Only time will tell.
