As ProGrade Cobalt Enters the Fray, the CF Express 4 War Begins

As expected, ProGrade Digital has announced its first Type B CF Express media card utilizing the new CF Express Gen 4 architecture.

The new Cobalt Class Type B Memory Card offers a massive 1.3 TeraByte capacity and promises to be ProGrade’s fastest card to date.

Based on a PCI Gen 4 X2 interconnect design, the Cobalt class card transmits data via an NVMe host interface. The result offers a rated read speed of 3,000 MB/s and sustained write speeds approaching 2,800 MBs.

“Our inclusion of PCIe Gen 4 controller technology, coupled with the upcoming UBS 4.0 high-speed readers will allow offloading speeds three times greater than previously possible,” states Prograde CEO Wes Brewer, “providing a dramatic reduction in workflow processing time.”

The media card also offers low standby power consumption through the use of the NVMe PS0-PS4 support and a metal casing for wicking away heat and durability.

The design also has thermal throttling built into its overall design to guard against overheating on sustained writing sessions.

With its stout design and high capacity, the Cobalt Class Type B media card looks to be an ideal option for those shooting high-resolution video at 8K and above, and ProGrade states that the card has been tested and approved by RED for use in the RED V-Raptor and Komodo-X cinema cameras.

An Upgraded Reader

ProGrade has also released a new card reader to be able to handle the super-fast speeds offered by the Cobalt’s Gen 4 performance. The ProGrade CF Express Type B Single-Slot USB 4.0 PG05.6 Card Reader uses a new USB 4.0 certified cable to transfer data at up to 40 Gbps.

Brewer touts that the PG05.6 reader can reduce file transfer times by up to 67 percent when compared to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 technology of the current reader.

The card offers an improved heat sink plate to keep the Cobalt card cooler and protect the data throughput during transfer, and a magnetic base and an adhesive metal plate that allows users to mount the reader to any work surface, such as the back of a laptop.

Pricing and availability

The 1.3 TB Prograde Cobalt Class Type B CF Express Media Card is available now for a retail price of $1,459.00, with a two-pack available for $ 2,629.00.

That’s a hefty price to pay for all that performance, but combined with its high-capacity storage options, 8K shooters will have plenty of room to capture longer form takes and interviews. The cards also come with ProGrade’s 3-year warranty.

Moreover, the ProGrade CF Express Type B Single-Slot USB 4.0 PG05.6 Card Reader is also available now for $99.99. All Products are available from ProGrade Direct and their authorized retailers. The reader, however, has yet to appear on product listings.
