Canon Updates Firmware to a Host of Cameras in the Lineup

Canon has announced firmware updates to nearly a half-dozen mirrorless and Cinema cameras, as well as a handful of its PTZ models.

The new 1.0.7.1 firmware update is expected to be released in December of 2023 and promises to enhance the capabilities of cinema cameras including the EOS C70, EOS C500 Mk. II and C300 Mk. III.

The Canon R5C and professional camcorders such as the XF605 will also get increased support. Here’s a quick breakdown of what is coming in the new firmware updates, broken out by camera model:

Professional Cameras:

Canon Cinema EOS C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III

  • Adds a Digital Tele-converter.
  • Supports camera control from the new RC-IP1000 Remote Camera Controller.
  • Adds flexibility with file naming conventions on proxy files, which enhances compatibility with non-linear editing software systems.
  • Enhancements to the vector scope will now enable the display of the vector color and color space on the screen.
  • Adds compatibility with the CN-E31.5-95mm Flex Zoom Lens.

EOS C70

  • Adds a Digital Tele-converter.

  • Adds flexibility with file naming conventions on proxy files, which enhances compatibility with non-linear editing software systems.

  • Adds compatibility with Canon’s Super 35mm Flex Zoom lenses.

XF605

  • Adds support for SRT protocol.
  • Adds file recording in XF-AVC Full HD 25 megabits per second format.
  • Proxy file recording in MP4 16 megabits per second in XF-AVC Full HD 25 format.
  • Adds chunk recording and continuous playback of multiple clips.
  • Adds flexibility with file naming conventions on proxy files, which enhances compatibility with non-linear editing software systems.
  • Supports camera control from the new RC-IP1000 Remote Camera Controller.

Mirrorless Cameras:

EOS R5 C

  • Adds flexibility with file naming conventions on proxy files, which enhances compatibility with non-linear editing software systems.
  • Enhancements to the vector scope will now enable the display of the vector color and color space on the screen.
  • Adds frame display function while recording.
  • Adds compatibility with the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z lens with Power Zoom Adapter and the RF Prime Cinema Lenses.
  • Adds compatibility with Canon’s Super 35mm Flex Zoom lenses.
  • Adds improvements to the camera’s photo mode.

PTZ Cameras:

For PTZ Cameras, such as the CR-N700, CR-N500, CR-N300, and CR-X300 , Canon has added support for the following new features:

  • Preset and Trace thumbnails have been added to help make the cameras easier to control in a more intuitive fashion through visual thumbnails in the user interface and through Canon’s new Remote Camera Control App.
  • Still image display between presets
  • SRT adaptive bitrate is adjustable based on available bandwidth.
  • Multiple Free-D protocol destinations
  • Partial restore option to restore baseline video settings from a backup, while retaining networking configuration and administrator credentials

A new app

Canon is also announcing its new Multi Camera Control App (CMCC) which will enable camera operators to control multiple cameras from a compatible mobile device such as an iPhone, but no word on whether it will work on iPad.

The app will be able to adjust various remote camera settings including start, stop, ND filter, ISO, white balance  exposure control, touch auto focus, picture profiles and more.

There is also a new Chunk Transfer Function which allows bitesize uploads of long duration recordings via FTP using Canon’s Content Transfer Mobile app.

Availability

Both the firmware updates and the Multi Camera Control App are expected to be available from Canon’s Support site sometime in December of 2023.
