Firmware Update for Nikon Z8 and Z9 Coming Soon

Later this month, it is rumored that Nikon will be releasing a firmware update for both the Z8 and Z9 full-frame mirrorless cameras, and the update promises a much-needed new feature.

The update will provide what is believed to be a Pre-Release Burst Mode which will capture images in either JPG or RAW before the shutter is even triggered.

Though Pre-Release Burst mode in JPG already exists in the Nikon Z9, the company wants to extend the feature to shooting uncompressed RAW images as well.

The update will bring a Pre-release burst mode that, once set, will trigger a burst of still images when pressing the shutter button halfway down. The option is also enabled when the AF-ON button is pressed while using the back button focus option.

“Once Pre-Release Burst is set, you can confirm everything is working by looking into your viewfinder,” states Nikon. “At the bottom of the viewfinder, there will be a ‘Pre’ symbol indicating Pre-Release Burst is activated…. a green dot appears, indicating the camera is buffering images.”

When the photographer is ready to capture an image by fully depressing the shutter button, the camera will save one second of the images that were buffered before actually hitting the shutter.”

The update is expected to drop in late December and will be available for download from the Nikon Support Website.
