Samyang Optics has just announced a new addition to their premium XP line of lenses – the Samyang XP 50mm f/1.2. The Samyang XP line already includes the ultra-wide 14mm f/2.4 and portrait XP 85mm f/1.2 lens announced back in 2016.
The Samyang XP 50mm f/1.2 has been designed for Canon full-frame DSLR cameras such as the 5D Mark IV or the large-mega pixel Canon 5DSr with a 50 megapixel sensor. The new XP 50mm f1.2 has also been positioned for use with 8K capable digital cinema cameras thanks to its resolving power.
Samyang XP 50mm f/1.2 Highlights
- Designed for Full-Frame 50 MP DSLR sensors & 8K video
- EF mount
- Rubberized focus ring
- Ultra Multi-Coating
- 86mm filter tread
- Manual Focus
- 9 blade aperture
- 11 lenses in 8 groups
The XP 50mm F1.2 is available at this point in Canon EF mount only, and of course covers 35mm full-frame and everything in between and the optical design incorporates a 9 blades aperture for smooth and pleasing bokeh effect when shooting at wide apertures. The rugged construction and ergonomic rubber focus ring will help you nail your focus manually, as this lens does not support AF.
Furthermore, the optical design features 11 lenses in 8 groups, including a single aspherical and a single high-refractive lens element to deliver sharp and vivid images, while the Samyang’s UMC (ultra multi coating) helps to eliminate flare and ghost artifacts. The lens weights at around 1200 grams, without the hood, so it is not a lightweight lens, however given the amount of optical elements inside it makes sense.
The Samyang XP 50mm F1.2 lens is scheduled to ship sometime in March and go for about €950 in Europe, and $999 USD in North America.
To celebrate the launch, Samyang Optics will hold various consumer events on Facebook and Instagram. For more information head over to Samyang Optics’ official website.
