Canon PowerShot SX740 HS is a new Pocket-Friendly Compact 4K Camera with 40x Zoom

Wait, what? Canon just announced a pocketable point-and-shoot camera with actual 4K recording? Yes, you read that right, Canon just announced the new PowerShot SX740 HS digital camera with a hefty 40x Optical Zoom Lens (equivalent to 24-960mm), a 20.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 4K UHD at 30p (and 25p in PAL), making this a historic first for the Canon PowerShot series!

Now before you get too excited, the 20 megapixel sensor is quite tiny – 1/2.3″ CMOS so it is far from an “incher” that you may find in more upscale models from the competition. Again, this a point-n-shoot camera that is priced at $400 US aimed at regular folks who just want a quick holiday snapper, so it wont exactly set your world on fire if you make videos for a living.

Canon PowerShot SX740

The new Canon PowerShot SX740 HS features a DIGIC 8 Image Processor, dual-sensing image stabilization (whatever that means), automatic image transfer (yeah, it is a travel camera for millennials), and a 3.0-inch LCD screen that rotates 180 degrees, because it’s 2018 and vanity prevails automatically making the art of taking selfies a mandatory pre-requisite for social acceptance.

Canon are pitching their new PowerShot SX740 HS as your smartphone substitute for snapping holiday photos and thanks to the massive 40x optical zoom and image stabilization it will surely do a better job than your average smartphone. High-speed continuous shooting is rated up to 7.4fps, you also get an ergonomic design and of course built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

4K VIDEO and 4K Timelapse Caveat: Get this – from the fine print in the promo video below, pay attention where it says – “Shooting takes place by cropping pixels from the centre of the sensor!” – yes, folks – 4K cropped video from a 1/2.3″ sensor. They couldn’t (or wouldn’t want to) do a full pixel readout from a 20 megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor. Take that as you may.
