RED KOMODO 6K Camera Setup Build (2021 Edition)

RED changed their methodology quite a bit when they released the KOMODO. It didn’t need a ton of extra bits and pieces to start shooting, all you needed to do was attach a battery, pop in a card and you were good to go. However, as with all compact cinema cameras, many filmmakers found improvements to ergonomics and functionality with the addition of some rigging and accessories.

Coming from DP Lars Goldbach is another setup featuring the RED KOMODO 6K with another bunch of recommended accessories. This is a relatively recent one put together in 2021 if you are looking from something new.

At the core of this rig build is the Ignite Digi KEYSTONE as the cage. This is a solid build and has plenty of mounting points for all your other accessories. Adding on to this is the Camera Top Plate B and Universal Camera Bottom Plate, to give a little more structure to the full cage. The bottom plate also fits on a Ronin, which is nice. And there is also a Dual Rod Mount.

For lenses, he did pick up an RF-to-PL Mount Adapter to use his cinema lenses. You can pick up whatever you prefer, like this option from Wooden Camera.

KOMODO runs on two Canon BP series battery packs by default, but for running off some more standard V-mount batteries there is a nice plate adapter from Tilta. He then runs some LEMO cables for powering accessories along with a D-tap from the battery. It isn’t RED certified so you don’t get true battery percentage.

For wireless monitoring, Lars tacked on a Vaxis Storm 1000S Transmitter Kit. He was able to mount it right to the side of the cage.

On the top, he adds on a few 15mm rods. He just uses a few from SmallRig that are carbon fiber. To this he mounts the Tilta Nucleus-M for controlling the lens.

Now that everything is wired up, he adds the Top Handle. Also from Ignite Digi, this is a quick release handle design that secures to the top plate. To the front of this he adds a monitor mount with ARRI locator pins.

Finally, you just throw on your battery, matte box, and other final bits and you are ready to go.

It’s a nice therapeutic watch to see Lars just put together and if you are looking to build your own KOMODO rig, you might learn something from how he gets his set up.
