8K RED V-Raptor Camera is Now in Stock

RED has announced that the 8K RED V-Raptor is now in stock. The flagship 8K V-Raptor digital cinema camera, which RED has deemed the “most powerful and advanced RED ever,” is the first camera utilizing RED’s DSMC3 architecture.

The V-Raptor features a new multi-format 35.4 MP 8K image sensor which records 8K VV, 6K Super35, 4K, 3K Super16, and anamorphic options with over 17 stops of dynamic range, the highest of any RED camera.

Using RED Raw, the V-Raptor also captures color in 16-bit RAW and uses RED’s IPP2 workflow and color management for greater color accuracy and gamut.

The image sensor has a diagonal sensor size of 46.31 mm, making the V-Raptor ideal for large format image capture with larger lenses. The camera has an integrated RF lens mount, but also supports Canon EF lenses with an RF to EF mount adapter, and accepts other lens adapters for alternative options.

The V-Raptor doesn’t have a global shutter, but the company says that the rolling shutter has a high-speed readout that is twice as fast as any other RED, keeping motion artifacts at bay. The camera also has an optical low-pass filter for color quality and sensitivity control.

Other features of the V-Raptor include a right-side control interface with hard buttons instead of a touch screen so that 1st and 2nd assistant camera operators can make adjustments without any mistakes.

There’s also phase detection autofocus, dual 4K 12G-SDI outputs, XLR Audio, phantom power, and 1080p Livestream support. The V-Raptor is capable of a max data rate capture of up to 800 MB/S using RED or other compatible CF Express media cards.

The camera is powered by compact RED and Core SWX Micro V-Mount batteries to keep the camera compact and light but also supports RED Approved batteries from Anton Bauer, bebob, FXlion, Hawk-Woods, IDX, and SWIT.

The dual charger can recharge a fully depleted cell in 2.5 hours or four hours for two. Full-size V-Mount and Gold Mount batteries can also be deployed using an adapter.

RED also announced that the RED V-Raptor was field-tested on the MAX original series HACKS, which garnered 17 Emmy nominations.

The RED V-Raptor is available for a retail price of $24,500 from RED direct, or authorized resellers. It comes with a free four–year extended warranty. A $2400 value. Users can also download the latest firmware update and Sample R3D files at their downloads page.
