Sony has just announced a new ultra-wide FE 20-70mm F4 G Master lens with a compact and lightweight design and a broader field of view.
The lens is the 71st E-mount lens released for the e-mount lens system and has been designed for everything from Vlogging to intimate portraits.
“The FE 20-70mm F4 G is redefining the standard zoom in our G Lens category to meet the needs of today’s content creators,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.

The FE 20-70mm F4 G lens has two advanced aspherical lens elements, three extra-low dispersion elements, one extra-low dispersion aspherical element, and one aspherical lens element, with the front element coated with a fluorine coating to reduce water and oil to keep the lens clean.

There are additional coatings optimized for higher resistance to lens flare and ghosting for better contrast and clarity.
The lens offers a constant aperture across the entire focal length, and a 10-degree wider field of view at 20mm Sony’s 24mm variety.
This additional image real estate will be a blessing to video content creators shooting at 16:9 or 2.35:1 aspect ratios.
And the lens has the usual G-Master designed dual XD linear motors for internal focusing that is smooth and silent and has the bonus of keeping the front lens element stable so that the circular polarizer and variable ND filters will stay steady as the lens focuses.
Sony also says that improved thrust efficiency provides up to a 60 percent increase in autofocusing speed with tracking improved by double that of previous models.
The lens also has a .39x magnification and a minimum focusing distance of up to 11.8” (30 cm) at 20mm and up to 9.8” (25 cm) at 70mm.

The lens also can be declicked with a switch as well as offering two programmable focus hold buttons to move from one focus point to another, great for video work.
Speaking of video, Sony has also stated that the overall design of the FE 20-70mm keeps hunting and focus breathing to an absolute minimum and prevents focus and axis shift while zooming.
Working in concert with Sony’s Active Modevii image stabilization, the G-master lens is “highly effective” in providing a stable image.
Moreover, the lens barrel has rubber gaskets to keep the internal working moisture and dust resistant. The lens also has a nine-bladed circular aperture for soft and pleasing bokeh.
Overall, the lens design is very compact, measuring 3.89 inches (99mm) when fully retracted, and weighing just 17 ounces (488g).
Pricing and availability
The new FE 20-70mm F4 G will be available in March 2023 for a retail price of $1,099 USD at Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America. More detailed product information can be found on the Sony US website.
