Fresh of its acquistion of RED for its creative portfolio, Nikon has announced a new Nikkor 28-400mm F4-8 VR Z mount lens.
This lens is a full-frame super zoom lens that is designed for Nikon full-frame mirrorless cameras and is considered to be one of the most versatile zooms in the Nikkor portfolio.
The Nikkor Z-mount lens is designed for content creators, travel and sports photographers, and wildlife shooters.

It offers an extremely long focal length of 28mm-400mm, providing a 14.2x optical zoom range, the first of its kind for Nikkor Z lenses.
Despite its long reach, the Nikkor 28-400mm is lightweight, weighing only 1.6 pounds (725g), making it the lightest in the Super Zoom class. The lens is also remarkably compact, measuring about 5.57 inches (141.5mm) in length.

The lens is designed with a linear manual focusing drive and a stepping motor for high-speed autofocus, which ensures smooth transitions while shooting video and stills.
It has a minimum focusing distance of 7.87 inches (.2m) at a wide angle and 3.9 feet (1.2m) at a maximum telephoto.
Nikon has also focused on video production, with stable exposure and focus breathing suppression while focusing.
The lens has a magnification ratio of .35x, which allows for close-ups at short distances for product photography, wildlife, and plant life. Additionally, it maintains a “pleasing” bokeh with a blurred background despite its aperture speed.
The Nikkor 28-400mm F4-8 VR Z mount lens is equipped with vibration reduction image stabilization, which can dampen out up to 5 stops of camera shake, reducing blurring for sharp photos and stable video while shooting handheld.
Synchro VR can also be activated to achieve up to 5.5 stops of image stabilization when combined with a compatible VR-based Nikon camera.
The lens is designed to be both dust and moisture-resistant, and the movable parts are sealed to protect the lens barrel against the elements. The lens also has a square lens hood to guard against flare.
Pricing and Availability
The Nikkor 28-400mm F4-8 VR Z mount lens will be available beginning in the middle of April 2024 at a retail price of $1299.95. Users can also pre-order the lens starting today, with shipping estimated to begin on April 18, 2024.
