Intel has expanded its Optane SSD 905P lineup with the inclusion of a 1.5TB model built around the proprietary 3D XPoint memory technology that replaces the traditional NAND memory found in normal SSDs, delivering faster, low-latency performance vital for intense storage workloads.
Just like its 480GB and 960GB counterparts, the all-new 1.5TB Optane SSD is equipped with an NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and has a half-height, half-length (CEM 3.0) form factor. Regarding speed, the drive offers blazing-fast performance with impressive sequential read and write speeds of up to 2600 MB/s and 2200MB/s respectively in the range of 575,000 IOPS and 550,000 IOPS.

Other noteworthy features of the Optane SDD 905P include 1.6 million hours mean time between failures (MTBF), an endurance rating (lifetime writes) of 17.52PB, AES 256-bit hardware encryption, an uncorrectable bit error rate of 1 sector per 1017 bits read, read/write latencies of 10 µs, and more.
It has also been reported that Optane SSD 905p will debut in M.2 form factor soon starting with a 380GB capacity. Unfortunately, it’s still unknown whether there will be larger M.2 capacities available down the road and how much would they cost. What’s clear, though, is the fact that the 1.5TB Optane SSD 905P won’t be cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
Currently, the 960GB version will set you back whopping $1,300 which only goes to show that premium blazing-fast low-latency SSD technology comes at a price. Nonetheless, the breakthrough performance for the most demanding storage workloads requiring high endurance to ensure storage reliability is already at our disposal as long as we can justify the steep price involved.
